Belt and rank systems in MatPilot

Every grading day runs on a rank system, and no two arts use the same one; MatPilot is art-aware by design.

Supported arts and rank systems

  • BJJ, IBJJF-standard: white, blue, purple, brown, black, with coral and red at senior levels. Kids run a separate 13-belt ladder (white through grey, yellow, orange, green) that converts to blue at 16.
  • Judo, kyu colour belts counting down to black, then dan grades counting up, including the red-and-white and red belts at the most senior levels.
  • Karate, multiple styles supported (Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Uechi-Ryu, Kyokushin, Ashihara, Enshin, Shajin), each with its own colour ladder and kyu/dan grading.
  • Taekwondo, both WT/Kukkiwon and ITF ladders, colour belts through black belt dan grades.
  • Muay Thai, traditionally has no belt system at all, just experience tracking. Gyms that use the prajiad armband ladder can enable that as a separate belted variant instead.
  • Boxing, Kickboxing, MMA, Wrestling, no belt system. These arts are tracked by experience tier rather than rank.

Primary art

If your gym teaches multiple belted arts, the first belted art you enable becomes the primary rank. This is the belt shown on member cards and diplomas by default.

Stripes and degrees

MatPilot tracks progress within a belt using the terminology each art actually uses. BJJ colour belts carry 0 to 4 stripes, and BJJ black belt carries 0 to 6 degrees. Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo grade their black belts as dan ranks ("1st Dan", "2nd Dan", and so on) rather than stripes. Arts with no belt system simply track a level, with no stripe or degree count at all.

Coral belts

BJJ coral belt milestones (red-and-black, red-and-white, red) are handled correctly: they display as the milestone itself, not as a belt-plus-stripe combination.

Age-aware kids belts

For members under the relevant age threshold, MatPilot automatically applies the kids belt ladder rather than the adult one, including the different stripe sequences some kids systems use. Set the member's date of birth correctly for this to work.
