Kiosk or front-desk staff?
The kiosk isn't a replacement for a human; it's a queue-killer so the human can do human things.
What the kiosk handles alone
Routine volume: members checking in, walk-ins signing up, waivers getting signed. For most gyms most of the time, that's 90% of the front desk, and the kiosk does it without a queue, in your branding, all day.
When you want a person
- Payment conversations: drop-in fees, plan questions, a failed card; tablets are bad at empathy
- Kids nights: parents have questions a form can't answer
- Busy intake periods: January's queue of new faces converts better with a handshake
- Anything blocked: suspended members, unsigned-guardian edge cases, the kiosk politely refuses and a human resolves it
Using both well
Give front-desk helpers the reception role (see What reception staff can access): they get rosters and manual check-in on their own phone, and the kiosk keeps eating the routine taps beside them. The pairing between a tablet that never gets tired and a person who never gets asked "how do I check in?" is the whole point.
